SEO by Yoast

Yoast plug-in is a product of the team Yoast which was founded by Joost de Valk.  Yoast SEO for WordPress plug-in is a  free product by the team Yoast made available for the online community to optimize their content writing skill.  In this particular post, I will cover in details about the content analysis of  Yoast SEO plug-in.

The plug-in begins by analyzing the snippet as it would appear in the Google’s SERP.  Once your blog post starts ranking for a particular keyword,  Google displays the particulars of your post in brief in the SERP.  The title of the post appears first followed by your URL details, date and post title.  A brief description called the meta description about your content also accompanies them.

To entice a visitor into reading your post from the scores of posts that appear in the SERP, it is important that your meta description stands out from the rest.  A meta description must contain the focus keyword you want your post to rank for.  However, in case you don’t include the focus keyword in the meta description space of the plug-in, Google will deliberately skip that meta description and will reflect any part of your content containing that specific target keyword.  The plug-in, therefore, endorses the inclusion of focus keyword in the meta description by giving a green dot as an acknowledgment.

A focus keyword is that keyword/keyphrase for which you want your blog posts to rank for in the SERP.  The focus keyword space as shown in the content analysis of Yoast SEO plug-in in no way impacts your SEO. Many newbies in their initial years as a blogger, are under the perception that focus keyword is set as a target to be preyed upon by the bots of Google. Even I was no exception to this rule. I thought that the chosen focus keyword entices the google bots into indexing it. But then why do the Yoast SEO plug-in emphasizes on the focus keyword SEO. From the technical point, the plug-in in question guides the content writer to write/build a post around the focus keyword and help stay focussed throughout the post.

The golden rule in relation to the usage of focus keyword in the content analysis of Yoast SEO plug-in (and as shown in the above snapshot) implies that its presence should be evenly spread throughout the content. It must be in the first para, should be in every paragraph if possible, in the post title preferably beginning with the selected keyword/keyphrase, in the alt tag of the images and in the last para. If you sprinkle some of them in H2, H3 headlines, though not mandatory, it will be beneficial for your on-page optimization.

In all, the Yoast plug-in endorses a total repetition of the focus keyword up to 2.5% of the total word count. However, if analyzed from that perspective, it does not sound well EITHER.  Say a post containing 1300 words or more would require a focus keyword density of 32. That is the keyword needs to be used around 32 times in the content.

Well, it sucks. Sounds more like stuffing of keywords. More so, if you are targeting a three or more word keyword.  Try to use the focus keyword as much as naturally possible. Even if that takes your total usage to 0.6% to 1% of total word count. Use keyword substitution by using its alternatives, synonyms sourced from LSI Generators.

Say your focus keyword for a blog post is BENEFITS OF BLOGGING. You can use sometimes use the following synonyms:- advantages of using blogs, advantages of blogging, benefits of starting a blog.

Additionally, phrases whose intrinsic meaning reflect the intentions of or echoes the focus keyword can also be used. In this case, I will try why should I blog, why start a blog, why people blog, why write a blog, why do people blog, why use a blog or why create a blog.

In the later part, one can see if these long tail keywords make sense or not. Just ask yourself, why will you blog? Surely you will if you realize the benefits that accrue from it.

Search queries vary from people to people. While some will search for benefits of blogging, others will ask that why he should blog? Moreover, this will ensure that you don’t miss your share of ranking in the SERPs for the synonyms.

Google will love such post.

Likewise, if your focus keyword is UBERSUGGEST KEYWORD TOOL, you can use similar terms like UBERSUGGEST FREE TOOL or simply UBERSUGGEST. The good thing about using these keywords is that you will rank separately for all the three different terms. And there won’t be much difference in the search results.

Every newbie who has been a stranger to the Yoast SEO content analysis feature is initially under the perception that focus keyword in Yoast plug-in is to be inserted in its original form as sourced from the keyword generator tool of your choice. This is a myth and should be strictly avoided.  The keyword can be spun as per your natural requirement.
For a Search Term “Kolkata Wedding Planner”, you can spin the term to “Wedding Planner in Kolkata” or “Wedding Planner from Kolkata” and you will rank for “Kolkata Wedding Planner” only. Accordingly, the longtail keyword for this post “content analysis of Yoast SEO plug-in” can be used as “Yoast SEO content analysis“.  No matter if Yoast plug-in does not give the green signal for this.  Don’t be tempted to get the green button always.  For further details refer to Tom Dupuis referred below.

A focus keyword is judiciously chosen from amongst scores of long tail keywords. Earlier, I came across a post of Kulwant Nagi wherein he mentioned that a long tail keyword with preferably 800 to 1000 searches per month is one which we bloggers should target for.

However, Tom Dupuis in his blog post revealed the much-needed panacea for newbies or bloggers yet to make their mark in the world of blogging.

Blogs with domain authority 1 with little or no backlinks should target longtail keywords with 10 to 20 monthly searches. As per him, if 30 to 40 blog posts are build around such sort of long tail keywords, then the blog stands to get around 40 multiplied with 10 that is 400 search exposure. Neither bad for a newbie, nor for a dying blog also.

You will notice that search terms with search history of 10, 20 or 30 are an extension of long tail target/focus keywords with search history of 800 or more per month.

The advantage of using long tail keywords or say keyphrase to be used as focus keyword is that though the search volume is less or say very less, you stand a strong chance of getting searchers or clients who are searching for that specific keyword only. Therefore, you get specific or targeted traffic. The volume of such traffic may be low but the probability of it being loyal and conversion rate is high. Thus, it is profitable for your site to have such focus keywords.

This may have little to do with “Yoast SEO content analysis“.  But the role of focus keyword in the said analysis is of immense significance.  Hence, shedding some light on its selection process is also inevitable from ranking perspective.  The above piece of advice is life-saving for umpteen number of bloggers in the blogosphere.  Kudos to Tom Dupuis again.

The other aspects of the analysis are as follows.

Content Analysis of Yoast SEO plug-in
  1.   The plug-in calculates your readability score.  Readability is all about how easily your post    or article can be read.  The higher the score the better.  I have covered this a few months back.  For details click here.
  2.    Ignore the reservations reflected by the plug-in in gray, red and orange as they matter little       to the SEO.
  3.    The plug-in turns red towards my focus keyword density.  I have restricted the usage of   the focus keyword content analysis of Yoast SEO plug-in for this post to the extend naturally possible.  The spun version Yoast SEO content analysis has been used also in moderation.

Folks, it is not that you should always go for the green dot in the analysis.

I have tried to cover all the features of the analysis.  If you have something more to suggest, please go ahead and add more value.
