In the infinite sea of webmasters, there is one uphill task that everyone confronts is relentlessly publishing original content.
The trend that the blogosphere witnesses is that your contents are struggling to stand out in the crowd of the infinite number of posts hitting the web.
Only a small number amongst them can be called awesome. Others are usually categorised as average. The reason which is readily assigned to is that your content lacks originality.
A good number of them seems to be a replication.
The emanating point of this discussion is, therefore, how can you create original content.
WHY SHOULD YOU PUBLISH AN ORIGINAL CONTENT
Publishing original content is an integral part of Google’s policy. And Google awards disciplined webmasters with a decent position in SERP. So it is central to good SEO practices as much as it is from User Experience point of view.
The audience always wants fresh, original and unique content. So, for keeping your audience hooked to your content, you have to be original.
HOW TO WRITE ORIGINAL CONTENT
But the question that crosses our mind here is how are we to go about with maintaining the originality of a content.
Because what confuses us is how to sustain an original voice in the crowd of millions sharing the same space.
Needless to say that this very situation gave rise to unfair practices on the web. Bloggers started duplicating contents, spinning articles, sourcing content from online content generators etc. These forms of spammy practices punctuated the journey of web writing.
PERSONAL EXPERIENCES ARE ALWAYS ORIGINAL
A flawless way of maintaining your voice is by penning your personal experiences you have gained. Your experiences are exclusively yours. You have a natural patent on it and it reflects your perspective only.
Personal experiences vary from person to person. Besides, it is an extremely rare coincidence that two or more persons have the same sort of experience.
And even if they do have, their perspective of viewing things may be different. Therefore, experiences will always remain a primary source of original content.
START YOUR POST WITH LIVE EXAMPLES
Bloggers come and bloggers go, as also their creations. There are only a handful of blog posts which leave an everlasting impression on your mind.
The key to authoring such an immortal work is using examples. Examples help deliver the knowledge in a unique way. Even if the topic is an overused one, it helps.
I did come across one such post. I should be providing a link by way of acknowledgement. But, sorry I am unable to recollect the blog name – probably Socialmediaexaminer.
However, allow me to continue.
The post starts in this manner with a unique EXAMPLE – You know your pizza recipe is better than Mcdonald’s. But how popular is yours when compared with Mcdonald’s. That is because that Mcdonald has thousands of outlets across the globe distributing its pizza. But you have none. Likewise, a blog which has numerous unique posts with little social exposure makes a perfect ingredient for failure.
The author is sharing a common knowledge here. But what is uncommon here is the way he exploits his example. This brings originality to his content apart from making it unique.
Maintaining originality sometimes becomes an issue as tips/hacks are not always executable.
Sharing of common knowledge becomes inevitable but using examples as a medium will leave a lasting impression.
EXPERIMENT AND BE INNOVATIVE
From whatever experience, I have gained, I can tell that there is no such niche on which people haven’t talked or written. So there will be a lot of sharing of common knowledge on a subject.
In other words, people will be talking more about the basic perception of a subject.
Simply reading posts after posts will be of no help. If you want to show your original version to the world, you have to think differently. You have to experiment and innovate continuously.
Your experimental findings and innovative attempts will obviously find takers in the blogosphere. I have maintained the same stand before in one of my previous posts.
BEING CONTROVERSIAL ALSO MATTERS
A blog post can be made catchy in many ways.
You may simply start by sounding controversial actually when you are not. Say I am writing on keyword stuffing. All know that is unethical and unfair.
So, why not start it in this way? The most legit way of practising keyword stuffing. This sort of introduction will not only be original but also eye catching.
For a moment, you will think what am I talking about? But I will say what others are also saying in a different way. The best way to practice keyword stuffing is by writing lengthy posts.
You may also write your content on any new thought or different perspective which is controversial.
Commonness, concurrence, being conventional foster dullness, boredom. On the otherhand, a controversy appears original. For there is always an element of exclusiveness in its vocabulary. That is just the value of limited possession.
The above premise finds endorsement in Jeremy Knauff’s post in Search Engine Journal “Guide to Creating Content for a Boring Industry”.
STARTING & ENDING YOUR CONVERSATIONS WITH QUOTES
Quotes, Proverbs also lend exclusivity to your content. In the first place, they are thought provoking, action initiating. Use them if they align with the context.
But all topics will not begin with quotes. Still, there are numerous topics which will afford you that luxury.
You only have to sense such opportunities.
While writing on image optimisation SEO, if I began in this way –
An old Chinese proverb says ‘ You tell me, I forget, you show me, I remember. You involve me, I understand.
Or I can make it more attractive by quoting – Why use images in blogs – A colourful message to colourful persons (audience) in a colourful way as a pray that colourful ray forever stay.
KEEP YOURSELF UPDATED WITH THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
The quicker you become aware of the latest developments in your business, the better. So, keep a tab on sites like Search Engine Journal, Search Engine Watch, Google Trends. Googles will obviously treat your content as original when you become the first to write on such trending topics.
START & END YOUR DISCUSSION IN UNCONVENTIONAL MANNER
Most of the blog posts begin in this manner – In this article/post, I will discuss this or that. Likewise, most posts either end with a question or a request to share. Web writers have used this sort of approach in profusion.
So there is no harm in starting/concluding your post in an uncommon way. Moreso, when deviating from the trend contributes to your originality.
TAKE YOUR OWN TIME TO WRITE ORIGINAL CONTENT
Paucity of time is an issue in today’s web writing. Moreso, when you have to frequently publish your posts.
Creative persons take the time to give shape to their content. Ideas don’t come all of a sudden. Sometimes ideas come and vanish in no time before you can pen them down.
Inadequate research takes a toll on the quality of your content. As a result, their contents are based on half-baked information and lack originality.
So you need to give yourself adequate time to research and brainstorm a lot. Pen down your ideas immediately before they are lost in the clouds of thoughts.
Again, taking a break from regular blogging may proof to be productive. This will help you to come up with fresh content ideas.
BONUS TIPS ON HOW TO WRITE ORIGINAL CONTENT
A few moments back I said, being unconventional is central in sounding original. Just post a picture relating to your niche and start a discussion around it. I think that will make your post darn catchy.
FINAL THOUGHT ON WHAT CONSTITUTES AN ORIGINAL CONTENT
In any niche, there is a lot of sharing of common knowledge. But you can still be original in this already crowded space.
Originality consists in approaching differently, exploring the unexplored. It is synonymous with being controversial, uncommon, innovative, exclusive.
In web writing, your originality hinges on how you utilise your creative instincts. Fear of failure may put your creative innovations on hold though.
But then. as Herman Melville would want us to believe – IT IS BETTER TO FAIL IN ORIGINALITY THAN TO SUCCEED IN IMITATION.
